What if...

Compact cameras or something the size of a NEX line, could take equal quality photos as your full frame DSLR. Would you opt out of the larger heavier DSLR and go with the smaller size camera? Would you use the smaller camera for professional work just as you once did with the DSLR?

I ask, because I'm looking at some of these smaller cameras and their specs are getting pretty impressive. Just a curious question :)

Does it have 16mm? 50mm 1.8? 200mm 2.8? I'll think about it...

Small cameras do not impress customers. :(

For me it is a big no. I like the size of my D300. Even the smaller Dslr bodies do not feel right in my hands. So the even smaller ones would be worse.

No. No, no, no.

Did I say "no"?

The body is not the issue, it's the glass. The little cameras can't cut it in that department.

Nope, I like the size of my DSLR. For traveling I would though.

They might cut it someday, but not yet. I snap my 24-70 f2.8, or micro 105 f2.8 on my D800 and think it might be a long time before I'll be tempted by the smaller format...... ;)

Why so serious?

Not for me, I'll leave that for the early adapters.

I would, but I know it would be tough to be seen as a legit photographer when on jobs because of what people associate a camera should look like.

I don't have a NEX, but I do have a Micro4/3 camera. In decent light these little camera already are very close to DSLR IQ. But they will not replace DSLR for various reasons: Vee can't always count on having decent light. Anything that improves the IQ of a mirrorless camera can also improve a DSLR. Commercial clients are not swayed by itty bitty cameras. The experience of handling and working with a DSLR simply beats a fussy mirrorless.

Of course a lot of those objections do not apply to hobbyists. At the consumer level mirrorless may eventually replace DSLR.

It's already the case. Mirrorless cameras can out shoot a DSLR in pure IQ terms.

And this is only the start. I don't mind smaller cameras, heck if they shoot as well, why not?

Carry less with me and still have the same performance if not better? I'm in. I hate having to carry around all the weight that I do right now. I think during the next few years, we are going to see major advancements in mirrorless cameras. I also believe we will start to see a shift in marketplace. I predict mirrorless cameras will capture the market with the early adopters being the beginners and intermediate photographers, some of the more seasoned photographers will hold on their DSLR's for some time before making the switch. Kind of like how digital came into the film industry.

Well that IS the issue I have with my small Oly PEN. While the images from it are OK, the act of handling and shooting with it is not as satisfactory as my DSLR. Unless you just like fumbling with cameras.
