$8000 and 15 days, where would you go?

9 years 3 months ago #424019 by Guy Farrell
I'd like to go on a vacation and ideally take a photo workshop.  However it seems most of my spots I want to go to have some sort of trouble going on these days:

1.  Africa Safari - Ebola
2.  France - people blowing up coffee shops
3.  Middle East - need I even start explaining
4.  Asia's - airplane issues
5.  Eastern Europe - war with Russia

I don't tend to live in a glass bubble, however to appreciate life and would like to enjoy my trip.  So, if you had $8000 to spend and 15 days which BTW could be stretched to closer to 20 days.  Where would you go to take a vacation and photo workshop?

This time of year, New Zealand or Patagonia. In the spring/summer the UK and Iceland.....;)
I wouldn't waste my money on a workshop....

Why so serious?

Alaska! But truth be known, I doubt anybody has ever done an auto tour of the US. Should come in well under $8000. Then there's also the Al-can. Up the Al-can to Fairbanks. Back down through Anchorage and south through B.C. on the Cassier Hwy. I have done that trip several time's but never had the money or the time to really take my time. Great trip!!!

Well unless you planned on going to west Africa for a workshop, then the rest of the continent is good to go. But like Ernesto I would scrap the shop, and just tour. I personally would not choose any of your trips. For me I would gas up my truck, and get lost in the northern Arizona back country. I think it would cost me all of $200, maybe $400 if I slept in any hotels. But it would be mostly outdoor accommodations.
Also on a side note. You can get killed, maimed, or be in danger anywhere you go in life, including going to work everyday. So why worry about what is going on is a small part of a large world. We all die, it is the natural progression of being born, so do not worry about it. I just go full ahead, and do not look back. It is more fun that way.

Are you interested in any particular kind of photography, such as landscape, fauna and flora, architecture...? For me, that would determine my itinerary. And, +1 to Joves on not being overly concerned about exposing yourself to risky situations... I wouldn't go to Mosul, but I am going to France:)

As John points out, it depends upon your interests. For me, the British Isles, New Zealand or Patagonia. And unstructured time and a car. No workshops, thank you. Learn the skills at home, where it's cheap, do your research, and go exploring.

And FWIW Alaska is okay, but you'll do a lot of walking to find anything interesting, IMO. You can find amazing stuff in BC, and it's a whole lot closer.

I'd kill for a chance to drive up and down scotland again, but for a month and the goal of getting amazing photos. Scotland was absolutely amazing around easter. I suspect in the summer it would be equally incredible. Especially up north. There is lots of isles that are incredible to visit, they look like they have just cracked off of a mountain and floated away.
