A longer lens would be a more appropriate tool but yes, you can! :P

Light is free… capturing it is not!

+1 on the above.

You can shoot with any lens, but a lot depends upon where you're located.

Move sideline photographers have a much longer lens. I've shot lacrosse with a 70-200, and it was fine for action near me. Not so much the other end of the field.  You'll want something up to 500mm or 600mm.
