Travel Option

7 years 3 months ago #513850 by tgkelly
I will be going on a 3 week tour of China and have been trying to decide on which lens to take for my D750. I have a Tamron 24-70 2.8 which is very sharp but heavy great for landscapes and mid range telephoto. I also thinking of my Nikon 28-300. I know it's technically as sharp but I used it recently on a short trip and was impressed with how good the results were across the focal range. I will not be enlarging prints just viewing on my LED TV and the 28-300 looks pretty good on that. I thing most photos will be more landscapes but the extra focal length gives a little more creativity. I would like to take both but they are heavy lenses. I leaning towards the 28-300 and take my 50 for low light but the problem is, the 24-70 is such a fine lens and it will be a once in a life time trip.
I would be interested in your views.

I'd take the 28-300. I would want to travel light....

Why so serious?

I tend to agree with Ernesto.
That said, I pack a NikonD3s, 14-24mm f/2.8, 24-70mm f/2.8, and 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6, so, go figure...:)  I do a lot of indoor available light shooting, and lugging those pachiderms saves a lot of time and aggravation in post. If, as you say, you'll mostly work outdoors, the 28-300 should be fine.

Tough one. Personally, I would be tempted to bring the 28-300 for the increased versatility. and option of using a longer focal length. However, if you feel that the Tamron is a better lens overall, follow your gut. Regardless of which you choose, I'm sure that you'll be able to get some magnificent results!

Thanks for your input. I will take the 28-300 and I'll pack my 50 as well. It is small and light and will give another option in low light.
Thanks again.

That 28-300mm isn't all that light of a lens is it?

No, it's not.  It weighs 800g (28.2 oz.). And it's wide, and long.  Together with my D600, the combo is 3.6 lbs.

The 28-300 and the Tamron 24-70 weigh about the same at least they feel about the same. I was thinking more of carrying around 1 lens with a versatile focal length as opposed to a technically sharper lens (I'm not complaining about the 28-300)with reduced focal length options. I always take the 50 as a backup anyway because it's small and light and you never know what will happen.
Thanks again for your thoughts.
