Suggestions on how to do a Night Shoot?

6 years 7 months ago #546789 by itstiffanie
Hello -- amateur photographer here.

Can someone provide me with some tips for doing a night shoot but with minimal equipment (if this is even possible)? I haven't done a night shoot in a while. The last time I took one was two years ago when I didn't know much about photography and the final products turned out to be disappointing. I wouldn't be capturing the landscapes but rather models posed outside of a building. I don't have much gear other than one external light. I know that this is a pretty hard project especially since I don't have a lot of gear, but I was wondering if anyone had any tips to do so?

Thanks in advance!

'........ I don't have a lot of gear....'

Having a lot of gear doesn't make a great photographer. Knowing what to do with what you have is what is important.

You say you have one external light. Is this a speedlight or a hot light? Do you have any kind of diffuser for this light? I would suggest doing this at dusk, just as it is getting dark or maybe somewhere that has some degree of ambient light.

I have done quite a bit of work with a single speedlight and the results can be very good. Makes for kind of a dramatic look which I like.

You could try light painting.

I have no more idea about the photographs. But I hear you can take good photos at night. Before some days I watched some videos on YouTube channel of singaporeaerialphotography.com. The videos were on night videos, but the videos are so attractive.
