macro is a road i would love to go down. it looks fun and something you could do at home when it is to cold or wet to get out and photo. what is the best sort of lens to start with if thats possible for that sort of help

An honest-to-goodness macro lens. Nikon sells different focal lengths, and Tamron makes a 90mm lens (that I know of). The relevant parameters are the magnification ratio and minimum focusing distance.  The shorter focal lengths require you to be closer to your subject to get the maximum magnification. That can be a problem for certain subjects.

You can also look into extension tubes. Very inexpensive and require different technique. They can be used with any lens, and are especially fun when used with a macro lens.  For example, did you know ladybugs (ladybirds) have whiskers?
