Canon’s New 4K-Resolution Cameras Big News at 2012 NAB Show
During the 2012 NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) Show, April 14–19 in Las Vegas, Canon unveiled the new EOS-1D C DSLR and Cinema EOS C500 cameras. The big news is both cameras feature video recording in 4K-resolution, which is four times that of high-definition: 4,096 x 2,160 pixels compared to 1,920 x 1080 pixels.
Both cameras, in addition to Sony’s new F65 digital cinema camera that also shoots in 4K, are part of a new revolution in digital imaging, as they become viable choices for major motion picture production. In fact, director, M. Night Shyamalan is using the Sony F65 to shoot the new Will Smith movie, After Earth.
Canon also introduced four new EOS Cinema-series lenses as well as a prototype of a 30-inch, 4K-resolution video display. The new Canon cameras are expensive by casual photographers standards, the EOS-1D C is $15,000 and the Cinema EOS C500 is reported to be approximately $30,000. Even at these prices, more independent filmmakers and video artists will have access to 4K-technology at a price modest production budgets can afford.
