Streetwise: Masters of 60s Photography To Open at Knoxville Museum of Art
-
The Knoxville (Tenn.) Museum of Art will be showcasing the black-and-white exhibition, Streetwise: Masters of 60s Photography, May 4–August 5, 2012. It features the work of 8 American photographers who recorded that transformative decade of outlaw bikers, the counter-culture, the Civil Rights movement and everyday life on the streets of major cities.
Organizers credit the inspiration for the exhibit to Robert Frank, a Swiss photographer, who created and published The Americans in 1959, a photo book that was an entirely new view of the country at that time.
Diane Arbus, Lee Friedlander, Jerry Berndt, Ruth-Marion Baruch, Garry Winogrand, Bruce Davidson, Danny Lyon, and Ernest Withers are the 8 photographers featured in the exhibition and they readily admit the influence of Frank’s photos.
Ruth-Marion Baruch’s photos captured members of the Black Panthers Party during its operations in California, while Danny Lyon’s contribution is images of the Chicago Outlaws motorcycle gang, which he actually joined.
