Award-Winning San Francisco Photographer Reveals the Darkroom’s Sense of Community During Exhibition
-
Eric William Carroll is putting his recognition as the recipient of the 2012 Baum Award for an Emerging Photographer to an interesting use at his SF Camerawork Exhibition through June 30, 2012.
The primary piece in his exhibit of images from the last six years is “This Darkroom Gone to Heaven.” It is a room, whose walls display large photographs of darkroom equipment in the form of white shadows. He designed it to be a statement on the loss of community that the darkroom has represented for decades.
During the age of film, photographers often worked together in a single darkroom exchanging stories, ideas and support for each other’s work. During the exhibit, photographers will be able to relive this sense of community with discussions about famous film photographers and techniques that have passed, or are quickly passing, into history.
The Baum Foundation selects a San Francisco-area photographer every year for its award. For more information about Carroll’s exhibit and SF Camerawork, visit sfcamerawork.org.
