Canon 90D Review

Last week, Canon launched its newest DSLR - the Canon EOS 90D. According to the company, this camera is “a perfect balance of speed, image quality and portability – ideal for getting close to nature and capturing fast-moving sports.”

Overall, the Canon EOS 90D shares the same design as its predecessor - Canon 80D. However, it comes with certain improvements over the older model. For example, the grip in the 90D is a bit bigger so it should feel more comfortable to hold the camera for extended periods of time. Moreover, the EOS 90D adds an 8-way AF joystick which makes selecting AF points much easier.

Adventurers will surely find a use for the Canon EOS 90D. In a relatively lightweight body, this camera packs 32.5MP APS-C sensor, 4K video, 10 fps burst shooting speed and many other useful features for action photographers.

Canon EOS 90D Specs

The Canon EOS 90D revolves around a 32.5MP APS-C CMOS sensor and DIGIC 8 processor. Since it was designed for travelers and people of action, the APS-C sensor is well suited for this camera. It provides you with plenty of resolution so you can capture the tiniest details even if you perform cropping or decide to make huge prints. 

With a native ISO sensitivity of 100-25600 (expandable to ISO 51200), this camera takes high-quality pictures whether you are shooting in a daily light or in a low-light environment. Additionally, the camera has a built-in flash that can be used for night photography. 

The camera is fast in all aspects. First of all, it has fast shutter speeds (1/8000sec) that will allow you to freeze the moment in order to take the best shot of the quick-moving targets. Moreover, the Canon EOS 90D has a continuous shooting speed of up to 10fps with AF/AE tracking via OVF and 11fps in LiveView.

 

Finally, the performance of the camera’s autofocus system doesn't disappoint, either. It has 45 cross-type AF points and 220K RGB+IR metering sensor so it should work quickly and accurately even if you shoot in low-light situations. Dual Pixel CMOS AF is only available in Live View, but in this case, you can use 5,481 AF points.

If you are out there in nature, you don’t have to worry about recharging the camera after a few shots. On a full charge, the Canon EOS 90D makes around 1,300 shots and this is not something you can get with any mirrorless model. 

Canon EOS 90D Design and Handling

 

The Canon EOS 90D is surprisingly compact for a DSLR camera. It measures only 5.5 x 4.1 x 3.0 inches and weighs around 24.7 oz (including battery and card). The camera is weather-sealed against dust and moire, so you can enjoy photography in not-so-welcoming environments. 

The optical (pentaprism) viewfinder measures 22mm, it has approximately 100% coverage and offers 0.95x magnification. Additionally, you can use a 3-inch vari-angle LCD touchscreen which is convenient for taking images from uncomfortable angles.

The Canon EOS 90D easily connects to other smart devices via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. This is helpful if you want to share images as soon as you take them, while it also provides you with other useful possibilities such as to perform remote shooting.

Canon EOS 90D Video Performance

 

The Canon EOS 90D has a lot to offer in terms of video. It allows you to shoot 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) videos up to 30fps and Full HD (1920x1080) videos up to 120fps. Moreover, it’s worth mentioning that this is the first Canon’s DSLR camera that features 4K video recording without crop.
