Canon APS-C mirrorless cameras come in different levels for the varied levels of photographers out there.

There are four new mirrorless Canon APS-C cameras to choose from, but I’ll be focusing on what I see as the top 2 Canon APS-C R-Series cameras, the EOS R7 and the EOS R10. I will also tell you about one of my favorite ways to shop for photography gear, the online platform MPB.

I love using MPB for used photography gear purchases because I can save money, they have an excellent rating system and warranty, and also because I can trade in or sell any unneeded equipment I have for even greater savings.

Let’s look at the features and capabilities of these Canon APS-C format mirrorless cameras and also see what they cost as pre-owned high-quality APS-C cameras.

Table of Contents:

Canon R-Series Cameras

Canon introduced the first EOS R-Series camera in 2018 with the Canon EOS R Full Frame format camera shown above. The R-Series cameras are mirrorless designs, eliminating the mirror box of DSLR cameras.

Mirrorless cameras are generally smaller and lighter than DSLR cameras with similar characteristics. No mirror allows camera designers to make their cameras simpler and more durable, too.

The Canon EOS R-Series of mirrorless cameras were designed around a new and improved RF Mount. This mount is wider than the old EF lens mount, allowing faster specialized lenses to be added to the lineup. With the right adapters, an EOS R camera can use EF lenses with full function and many other lens mounts with some functions and features being limited.

I’ve recently switched to mirrorless cameras for much of my professional photography, and I am enjoying all the features and capabilities offered by mirrorless cameras. The R-Series was introduced with Full Frame format sensors, and now Canon APS-C format R-Series cameras are also available.

As I discuss the Canon EOS R7 and Canon EOS R10, remember that Canon APS-C cameras have a crop factor for lenses. For Canon APS-C vs. Full frame, 1.6X is the crop factor.

Canon APS-C Format EOS R7

The Canon EOS R7 is the first Canon APS-C format camera we’ll look at, but it and the EOS R10 were released simultaneously in the Spring of 2022.

DPReview TV has a nice YouTube video detailing the EOS R7:

What makes this Canon APS-C format camera a top choice for shooters in crop format is the 32.5MP sensor. That’s a serious level of digital resolution capability, only surpassed in APS-C digital by a couple of cameras, and not by much at that. 32.5MP is higher than some Full Frame format cameras.

Besides the still imaging resolution, the Canon EOS R7 records oversampled 4K video without any cropping and can capture 10-bit footage in the C-Log 3 profile allowing for excellent color depth and good low performance. It also has mic and headphone jacks for audio.

Still imaging is fantastic with this camera, capturing RAW files and several levels of JPEG files. The EOS R7 has 2 card slots, uses Dual Pixel AF off of the sensor, and has in-body image stabilization, weather sealing, and dust sealing.

A fully articulated view screen doubles as a touchscreen control panel. There is no built-in flash, but it uses dedicated flash units for fully auto or user-controllable flash exposures.

Here is a list of some of the features and specs of the Canon EOS R7:

32.5MP APS-C CMOS Sensor

  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF II
  • 4K60 10-Bit Video, HDR-PQ & C-Log 3
  • 30 fps E. Shutter, 15 fps Mech. Shutter
  • 2.36m-Dot OLED EVF
  • 1.6m-Dot Vari-Angle Touchscreen LCD
  • Sensor-Shift 5-Axis Image Stabilization
  • Dual UHS-II Memory Card Slots
  • Multi-Function Shoe, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth

I found several examples on MPB in Like New condition for $1299.00.

Canon RF lenses and dedicated flashguns are also available on MPB.

Canon APS-C Format EOS R10

The Canon EOS R10 is a lower-priced Canon APS-C format camera with many features that entry-level and more advanced users will appreciate. The heart of the camera is a 24MP APS-C format sensor.

DP Review TV has another YouTube video covering the Canon EOS R10:

Some of the features and specs for this camera:

  •  24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF II
  • 4K30 Video, 4K60 with Crop; HDR-PQ
  • 23 fps E. Shutter, 15 fps Mech. Shutter
  • 2.36m-Dot OLED EVF
  • 1.04m-Dot Vari-Angle Touchscreen LCD
  • Multi-Function Shoe, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth

It adds a built-in flash but has one card slot instead of two, with less high-end video capabilities. There is also no in-body image stabilization, and the camera is not weather sealed.

What this Canon APS-C format mirrorless camera does have is more than enough punch for entry-level users and many features and functions more advanced and intermediate-level users will appreciate. It is significantly lighter than many of the other Canon APS-C cameras.

Another fantastic point scored in its favor is the comfortably low price of $834.00 for a Like New condition camera body on MPB.

Choosing Between the Canon APS-C R-Series Cameras

Looking at these two Canon APS-C format cameras, the decision of which one you should get seems pretty clear to me.

The EOS R10, shown above, is a great camera, fully capable of producing excellent quality still images and video footage. It is very lightweight and has controls that are easy to learn and simple to operate. The lightness of the camera body combined with a low price makes it a fantastic entry-level camera and is a viable option for intermediate but casual users, too.

But, the EOS R7, in addition to having a higher resolution sensor, also incorporates more advanced level features and control. It has in-body image stabilization, weather sealing, and higher-end video functions. I would rank this camera in the serious amateur or prosumer level of cameras for advanced users.

In other words, both of these cameras offer great performance. One is better suited for beginners, while the other is better suited for more advanced users.

Canon APS-C Vlogging Camera: EOS R50

Two other Canon APS-C mirrorless R-Series cameras deserve mention. The Canon EOS R50 is a wonderful vlogging camera with many creative controls that doubles as a fine still-imaging camera.

Finally, the Canon EOS R100 camera is very low priced, making it an excellent entry-level still imaging camera that's usable for simplified content creation by vloggers.

Why I Love MPB for Photo Gear

MPB is one of my favorite stores for photographic equipment of all kinds, cameras, lenses, video, and accessories. I call it my personal candy store!

I like MPB because they have a great quality control system, stand behind their gear with a 6-month warranty and a 7-day exchange period, and let me trade in or sell my unneeded gear to them. Their quality control begins before they take in a camera, inspecting each item before making an offer.

If they decide to accept any camera, lens, or accessory, it gets listed as the exact condition it is, including shutter count on cameras. There are also pics on the site of the actual item being listed.

Here is a video from the MPB YouTube channel explaining their condition ratings:

Every transaction I have made at MPB, buying, selling, or trading, has been simple and painless. Their process is straightforward, and everything they do benefits photographers wanting the most bang for their buck.

Try them out if you haven’t shopped there yet. Anyone shopping for a Canon APS-C format mirrorless will appreciate their commitment to excellence. Plus, you’ll get a great Canon EOS R-Series camera, whether you want the Canon EOS R7 or Canon EOS R10.
