How To Photography: Tell Your Child’s Back-to-School Story in Digital Photos

Every year, during late July, early August, parents and children are preparing for a new school year. It can be a wonderful and exciting digital photography story that you can create with your child (children). You’ll have the opportunity to develop your photojournalism skills and your child can be the central character of the story as well as taking a few of the photos from his or her perspective.

  1. Your back-to-school digital photography story starts with shopping for new clothes, school supplies, etc. You can capture many fun and candid images of your child shopping for new outfits and modeling them for you in the store. You can make it an interactive experience for your child by sharing his or her “modeling” photos immediately with his or her friends via social media from the store and soliciting their input. After all, your child wouldn’t want to arrive on the first day of school and discover he or she is wearing the same clothing item/shoes as a friend. What a fashion faux pas!

  1. Maybe, your child will be attending a new school because of relocation or advancement. During your visit to the new campus for orientation and to meet new teacher(s), take a number of photos that encapsulates that experience.

  1. When the first morning of the new school year arrives, find a few minutes to photograph your child dressed in his or her new clothes, with a new backpack, etc. Invite your child to shoot pictures of you preparing and packing his or her lunch. Then, record your child leaving the house, walking to the bus stop, waiting for the bus, entering it and waving through the window from his or her seat.

  1. If it won’t embarrass your child too much, then you can follow them to school and snap pictures of them meeting friends from the previous school year, the general mingling of students prior to classes beginning, your child finding his or her locker and finally entering the first classroom of the day.

  1. Be ready at the end of the first day of school to photograph your child’s arrival on the school bus. Maybe, he or she attends an after-school program, where you can capture additional images of the story of their day.

  1. Your child may already have that first drawing or other “important” paper to display on the refrigerator. Photograph him or her showing it to you when first arriving home, and then attaching it to the refrigerator or other prominent location.

  1. Finish your digital photography story of your child’s first day at school with a few low-light images of him or her doing their first evening of homework with just the illumination of a desk lamp. You may also be able to compose an interesting still life of his or her new textbooks.

Learning how to tell a story with your digital photography is a very important skill to development; plus, this story creates an opportunity to spend quality time with your child and allow him or her to contribute to the project. You may discover that digital photography is an interest, a passion, you can cultivate together for years to come.
