Learning how to control and use light in your photography requires that you travel to the places where light is special and unique…and the island of St. Lucia in the Caribbean is one of those places. Yes, the tropical sun is intense, but pleasant, and illuminates the natural beauty of the beaches, rainforest and Piton Mountains. It’s during the magic hour of the evening, however, when the fading light transforms St. Lucia into the ultimate palette for the creative photographer.

You’ll learn the nuances of that light and how to augment it with the subtle use of a flash when you join world-famed photographer Joe McNally and his special guest instructors during his annual St. Lucian workshop in flash lighting. According to Joe, this workshop has become so popular that he has scheduled two weeks in St. Lucia during August 2013. Each week will focus on a different aspect of flash lighting; and you’re invited to sign up for either week or both.

From August 18–23, David Burnett will guide and challenge you to become a better storyteller with your images. Few photographers in the world are more qualified to instruct you in these skills than David, who is one of the most accomplished photojournalists in the business. Not only will he help develop your photojournalistic skills, but also add the element of light to the equation, so you’re able to create and capture images that are more dramatic and emotional and reveal the true nature of the people and places in your viewfinder.

On most days, David and Joe will lead the workshop group on excursions across the island to photograph both the natural beauty of St. Lucia as well as the towns and people who live and work there. Whatever the subject matter, David and Joe will emphasize storytelling with light. Joe will conduct many flash lessons, showing students how to use the flash as a complement to ambient light, transforming already wonderful images into magical, mystical visions. Throughout the first week, workshop guests will discuss their work and David and Joe will provide critiques and tips on a myriad of important topics, from gear to sensor cleaning to workflow. Classroom sessions will constantly focus on flash photography, however, also teaching students about the use of flash lighting accessories, such as bounce boards, diffusers, gels and large silks to counteract the strong, midday St. Lucia sun.

For week 2 of Joe McNally’s St. Lucia flash lighting workshop, August 23–30, RC Concepcion is the featured instructor. RC’s particular genius and reputation as a professional photographer include not only camera work, but also post-production and the use of the Internet. RC will help students select and photograph subject matter with a final vision in mind that is then completed during editing. You’ll gain a better understanding that in digital photography the initial photo is not the end of the creative process. RC will make this clear during his HDR boot camp that will include a shooting session as well as a post session. Throughout the week, RC will share many skills and insights with you: basic digital video and editing, camera raw and Photoshop techniques. Joe will also be conducting various shooting and classroom sessions, exploring more of the uses of a flash for photojournalism as well as travel and nature images.

As has become a tradition at Joe McNally’s annual workshop in St. Lucia, the last night is always a group session on the beach. Flambos are lit to provide soft ambient light, and then students have the opportunity to use flash lighting and a setup of multiple flash heads to photograph models.

One of the photographers who has been a student at Joe McNally’s St. Lucia workshop said, “I went last year and it was a life changing experience. Highly recommended! Joe and RC were great and you can’t beat the location.”

Statements like that is why Joe expanded his St. Lucia workshop to two weeks. Register today for either week of the workshop or make plans to stay for two weeks; you’ll learn so much more…and “you can’t beat the location.”

Joe McNally’s St. Lucia Flash Lighting Workshops are August 18–23 and August 23–30 on St. Lucia. Guests will stay at two of the finest resorts on the island, Anse Chastanet and Jade Mountain.
