Sometimes I wonder how far some people will go to market a stupid idea. All I have to do is a quick web search on the market to realize that there is no limit to it. The only question that remains is who the heck buys all the stupid stuff invented by people who have apparently never matured from the college dorm mentality? There is answer to that too: a lot of people. The reason they buy this stuff? Maybe they think they need it, maybe it’s just for showing of in front of their friends, or maybe it’s just because they just want to own stuff they know they might never use.

Here are a few items that should not exist in the photography market out of common sense.

Petzval lenses

Does it make sense in this day and age of technical brilliance in optics to create lenses based on design and specifications from 175 years ago? Of course it does! All you have to do is market them to the right crowd (thankfully, a numerous one) and tell them what nice bokeh they have. Fail!

Digital camera swim mask

It’s a damn shame that GoPro cameras and HD video are only available for military purposes…not! If they were, then you would probably be thankful for having this amazing piece of technology for your underwater footage and photos. Just think about the incredible VGA video and the 8 megapixels available for video, and at the modest price of just $100.

Leica M Monochrome

I’ve always been a big fan of Leica and I still believe that one day I will have the arrogance to buy one just for fun. But spending $8,000 on a digital one that only shoots in black and white has to be something close to an obsession. If you really love Leica, buy a M7 and shoot some Ilford film.

Sony Lens Camera

Mobile photography is amazing and it’s constantly growing, but the main reason for that is the portability of the camera. You always have your phone with you. What sense does it make, though,  to carry an add-on that will make your phone much thicker and less comfortable to use? If you want something better than what your standard phone camera provides, just get a compact camera! Consider the RX100B as a good alternative.

Lensse iSteadyfor iPhone

This is yet another brilliant invention designed to improve mobile videos. I don’t like shaky videos on YouTube either, but let me have my doubts about the average person carrying one of these on a regular basis. Either leave the motion reduction to special software, have a steady hand or don’t film at all.
