5 wishes most photographers have

We’ve talked about common fears in the past, and how they can affect a photographer, or better said an artist. This time I want to shine a light on what photographers really want. Somehow I feel that along with everything else, photographers’ wishes have changed too. I guess it’s a natural step in evolution. It would probably be silly to hold on to the same wishes while everything else around you changes. But some things do stay the same.

So what do most photographers really want? I am guessing over here but I have a strong feeling that I am pretty close. If you do not find yourself in anything written here, please do not feel insulted and do not insult us. It is merely an assumption.

Here are what I believe are 5 popular among photographers, in detail.

Skill and knowledge

All photographers want to master their trade. You too probably want to know everything there is to know about composition, color and light, as well as the technical side of things. Well, this is one of the most achievable wishes on this list. But the fact that it actually takes a lot of hard work and effort, even sacrifice, is no secret. You need to constantly keep working in order to become good at anything, In photography, most of all you have to keep taking pictures, but you also have to study art and be familiar with its technical side.

Fame

It sounds cliché, but most photographers even if they admit don’t openly admit it, want to be famous. Don’t imagine fame like you would think of a movie star. No, they want to be famous in their field. They want young photographers to look up to them, they want public exhibitions and auctions where people will bid for their photographs and they want to rub shoulders with the famous people they photograph for a living. I’ll hold my thoughts on the probability for this one.

Steady financial well-being

Ok, this is something everybody on the planet wants. But the harder something is to obtain, the more you want it. And in the freelance photography, it’s been getting harder and harder lately. The competition is fierce, the offer is far greater than the demand, and even for seasoned pros who have their market cut out, the income is never actually secure. Most photographers want a steady, decent cash flow and that comes with constant flow of contracts.

Appreciation from peers

This is too is something that many photographers won’t admit wanting. For any creative individual, appreciation is an important part of the creative process. It is part of the fuel if you will. Now, appreciation is different when it comes from different sources. Photographers instinctively value the opinions of their peers more than what an educated person with little background in photography would say. This is both good and bad. Good for personal growth, bad for satisfaction. At the end of the day, you have to ask yourself who you are shooting for. Fellow photographers or admirers of all kinds?

Photographing what the heart says

This is one of the biggest, if not the mother of them all. In the photographer fairyland, everyone shoots everything they want and only that and they are also able to make a decent living from it. The shocking blow from reality will tell you over and over again that that’s not how things go. You make a living by photographing what you have to in order to put food on the table and pay rent, and shoot whatever else you want in the weekend. And maybe, just maybe, someday you will find that perfect balance of constantly shooting things you like for good money.

But all this should in fact be motivating .Nothing that will ever be worthwhile is easy to achieve. It often takes blood, sweat and tears but the joy will most defiantly be there as well. What are your wishes and what are you doing to make them come true?
