First of all, glamour photography isn’t for everyone. Second, it is different from fashion photography, yet they are often being confused. Fashion photography is about the clothes on the model. Glamour photography is about the model. That pretty much sums it up. It’s not the most accessible kind of photography and success is not entirely up to you. It has to do with the talent as well. Here are 5 steps that will help you improve or get a good start in glamour photography.

  1. It’s all about the connection

The way you connect with your model is crucial. The number one rule in glamour photography is to have a model with a high comfort level. You need her to feel as comfortable as possible because it will show in the photos a lot more than you might think. It might be awkward first, especially if you don’t really know each other, but it’s up to you to help her feel relaxed and gain confidence in herself and in you. An angry or shy model is no good to any photographer so make sure you have her feeling confident about everything.

  1. Have a concept

Improvisation can be awesome, but it’s not really for glamour photography. You need to have a clear concept, go through it with the model before the shoot and have all the details ready. Props and accessories, locations and light all have to be combined in one or more ideas that have to be well understood by both parties before any photos are taken.

  1. Don’t put the weight on the model’s shoulders

Things don’t always add up in a photo shoot. You might have a great location but a bad light. Or you might have a good light setup working for you, which is good, and expect the model to do her thing and take it from there. No matter how experienced the model is, don’t let her do everything by herself and carry the full weight of the shoot. Even if she is doing a great job, give her directions from time to time, even if it is something as little as putting her hand higher on her waist.

  1. Use other professionals

You want your model to look her best. That means hiring the right help. Hairstylists and make-up artists are trained to make a model look her best. Don’t let her do her own hair and makeup unless she is trained for it. It often takes and outside vision to bring out the best in someone. Also, if you have a themed shoot, outside help is vital.


  1. Time to be creative

Every time you photograph a model, you need to have patience on top of all things. Take your time to think before you push the button. Being creative takes a lot of thinking, and you aren’t going to do a lot of that if you focus on camera settings and light positions.

Have all these technical details ready and let your imagination shine.
