Working as a photographer has a general meaning that people relate to, yet in the real world, photographers are a lot like specialists from other fields: they work in separate segments or niches. The importance of having a niche might seem obvious to some, but too many amateurs or photography enthusiasts who enjoy shooting everything around them, things might be a little more complicated.

It’s a lot like going to a doctor, and once again, it can be very helpful to put yourself in the client’s shoes. If you’re looking for someone to shoot your wedding, you’re probably not going to turn to a stock photographer, or vice versa. This is just a basic example. In the long run, when building a career in photography, it’s important to start the journey focused on one, or at least not too many photography genres. What you enjoy shooting in your spare time is a totally different thing. Artistic events, exhibitions, competitions are one thing; putting food on the table is another. If you can accomplish all of them, good for you, but it you shouldn’t put too much pressure on yourself from this point of view.

Here are a few steps to help you find your niche and, with the right thinking and proper action, have a successful career in photography.

  1. Go for it

Sometimes you just feel that you’re attracted to a certain kind of photography. If it’s something in high demand, such as event photography, good for you. If it’s something with a smaller market, don’t worry about it too much. Go for it, because in the long run, if you’re good at it, the clients will come.

  1. Listen to the voice inside your head

It’s not always easy to clearly define what makes you “tick” when it comes to photography. It’s usually because most photographers enjoy shooting more than one genre. However, in most cases, there is a certain kind of photography that is closer to the heart. It’s also, in most cases, the genre you are best at. Photography is about passion, and when you put 100% into what you are doing, good things happen.

  1. Realize that it’s not permanent

You might find a niche and it might take you five or ten years to realize that it’s not really your calling. There are a lot of photographers who have had successful transitions, so no need to worry. It might not happen overnight, but with the right moves, even the most radical transitions can lead to a fulfilling career.

  1. Act even when scared

A lot of photographers settle for what they are currently doing, even if they clearly know it’s not what they like, because they are afraid. They’re afraid the money won’t’ be the same, that they might not be as good as they think and so on. Money will probably not be as good as before, especially in the early stages of a transition, but be patient and give it your best. So what if won’t be good enough? The truth is, no matter how good you are, there will always be someone better, so comparing yourself to other photographers is probably not the best idea. Being scared is normal; it’s the courage to act despite the fear that makes the difference in the long run.

  1. Market correctly

When choosing a niche, it’s essential to let people know that that’s your thing, that’s what you’re good at and what you expect to be paid for. Make sure you present that message in a form that allows no room for confusion for any of your clients.
