So what goes on behind-the-scenes in the life of a wedding photographer? His clients may know him to be outgoing and creative, but being married to the wedding photographer may be an entirely different experience.

Here’s 10 things you should know about being married to a wedding photographer:

1. They’ll be out of town a lot.

If you’re married to a great wedding photographer, then his schedule will be booked for months and months. He’ll be away on destination weddings or for engagement location shoots. He’ll almost not be around, so you need to get your schedules straight if you want him there for important occasions.

2. They won’t text or call when they’re away.

You can’t expect a wedding photographer to text or call to update you about his day, because he won’t have free time, or hands, to pick up the phone to let you know he’s eaten his lunch already. So, he’ll make up for it by having hilarious stories about how his day went when he comes back in the wee hours of the morning, after his event, while he’s eating, what might be his first meal of the day.

3. They spend a lot of time maintaining their gear, like every single day, even when they don’t get dirty.

Yes, I get it. These camera bodies and lenses do cost a small fortune and they help him earn a living, but even when they don’t have events or shoots, they can get quite obsessive about making sure their gear is in mint condition.

4. They’re usually hired on holidays and weekends.

A lot of weddings are scheduled on holidays and weekends because naturally, they want their guests to be available to attend. So, while that’s great for them, it sucks for you, when you’re spending those holidays and weekends without him. On the plus side, they have flexi-time, so you can arrange travel trips on weekdays. Just make sure you plan it ahead.

5. You’ll need to understand their lingo

If you don’t understand camera talk, trying to ask about what aperture or ISO is may not be the best thing to talk about when you have friends over, because soon enough he’ll be speaking in a completely foreign language, which leaves you and/or your friends clueless.

6. You need to know that two shots may look the same, but they’re not the same, really.

When they ask you, which shot is nicer, try to look really hard, as to which shot is nicer. Or better yet, just pick one. It’ll be a different conversation when you say, “Huh, they look the same to me.”

7. They obsess about other photographers, like big time.

They will follow the works of the photographers they like. They’ll compare their work. They’ll obsess. You’ll discover stalker-like qualities. These other photographers will be on their Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter news feeds, day in, day out.

8. You can’t get jealous of bridesmaid photos.

Every wedding photographer who is a smart businessperson knows bridesmaids are future brides, i.e. future clients. So, don’t be surprised or jealous to see stunning bridesmaid shots.

9. Each family trip is a potential wedding venue.

This will be a great venue for a wedding.” Yes, you’ll hear it once, you’ll hear it a dozen times. He sees every family trip you go to as a potential wedding location, and he’ll take his time taking shots “just in case” he books a wedding that’s located there.

10. Oddly enough, they won’t have a camera for family gatherings and events.

Honey, where’s your camera?” He left it at home because it was too heavy to lug around and he didn’t want to be the official photographer for the day. Go figure.

11. You’ll be disappointed if they don’t get good shots of you, because you’re probably like their toughest client.

Unless, you’re a supermodel, your photographer husband can seldom nail a perfect shot of you. You’ll expect a lot, seeing how he made those brides and bridesmaid look gorgeous in their photos, but when it comes to your photos, you’re wondering why it doesn’t turn out as good. Is it because you’re too tough on him, are you more self-conscious or is he too pressured? It’s a mystery.

12. You need to learn to be brutally honest when they ask, “Is this photo okay?”

While it’s okay to just “pick one” when he asks you to pick which is nicer, but when it comes to the “Is this photo okay?” question, you need to be brutally honest. You’ll want him to be better. So, if it’s not okay, say it’s not. He’ll respect you for it.

13. Your babies will have hundreds of photos.

The best part of being married to a wedding photographer is they’re experts at capturing moments and emotions. So when you have babies, they will be on them capturing every milestone, laughter, and smile, every time they get. And they would be adorable.
