Gigapixel images have been around for awhile, but this one is getting a lot of attention because of who created it.
In a partnership with NASA, Bentley, the famed car manufacturer, created this 53,000-megapixel image of the Golden Gate Bridge. You read that right - 53,000-megapixels, which if you weren’t aware, is 53 billion pixels. Printed out, the image would cover an entire football field.
The photo was stitched together from 70 smaller images using the same technology that NASA uses to create panoramas of the images beamed to Earth from the Mars Curiosity Rover. Needless to say, they didn’t use Photoshop to put this one together.
If you visit the Bentley website, you can use interactive tools to zoom in on minute details in the image, like the stitching of the logo on the passenger’s seat seen above. That’s the zoomed in view from 700 meters away, by the way. There are 4,500 stitches in the logo, in case you were wondering.
This may just be a fancy marketing ploy for a fancy car company, but boy, is this still an impressive photographic feat or what?!
Don’t expect to see this technology at the next WPPI convention. We’ll just have to make do with our regular old cameras for now.
