If you’ve never heard of “intimate landscape photography,” you certainly aren’t alone. It seems to be a relatively new term that actually describes something that many landscape photographers struggle to do: create photos of small vignettes - the details - of a larger landscape.

But why is intimate landscape photography so hard? Part of it is certainly a lack of practice. After all, when photographing a landscape, your eye is immediately drawn to the overall picture. Another difficulty is learning what camera settings to use when you’re focused on an area that might just be a few square feet (as opposed to many, many square miles).
