1. Don’t have the scratch for a $1,000+ professional monitor? Then, the 22-inch NEC MultiSync P221W could be your best choice at less than $400 ($367 at B&H Photo Video).

Read real customer reviews of the NEC MultiSync P211W here.

2. The ergonomic benefits begin with a panel width of 19.8 inches, which allows it to sit in a smaller space than many of its competitors.

3. The NEC MultiSync P221W monitor weighs 18.28 lbs., but its triangular-shaped footpad at 10.6 inches by 9.2 inches gives it plenty of stability, especially at the lowest screen height.

4. Since NEC is targeting graphic artists and photographers with the NEC MultiSync P221W, the company knew it was important that the monitor could pivot 90 degrees for a portrait orientation. The monitor also freely rotates most of 360 degrees and tilts back approximately 25 degrees.

5. NEC built even more versatility into the MultiSync P221W, as it can be mounted on a wall after detaching the base.

6. The stand also houses a series of vertically aligned hooks that help to keep cables hidden and neat.

7. One of the biggest benefits of the NEC MultiSync P221W for graphic artists and photographers is the array of connections they need the most: DVI, VGA and S-Video.

8. The onscreen buttons and controls are also very accessible and user-friendly, as four buttons are found on the lower right-hand corner of the bezel. The menu button activates the OSD, which appears in the middle portion of the display. From there, you can control brightness and contrast, and access an Eco mode that limits the brightness to 75 percent and 50 percent.

Use the auto brightness selection, and the built-in light sensor will automatically adjust the brightness, according to the ambient light level. If you’re a graphic artist or photographer, you’ll appreciate that NEC has included black-level control, which has been missing from many monitors.

From the OSD, you can also select four color temperatures, 5,000K, 7,500K, 8,200K and 9,300K. There is actually a fifth, a 6,500K sRGB.

Professional photographers will cheer NEC for including two of the four presets: Option 1, which sets the white point to clear base; and Option 2, which sets the white point to Blue base. The other preset choices are Native and Programmable.

9. The NEC MultiSync P221W monitor has a 16:10 aspect ratio and 1,680 x 1,050 resolution.

10.  Again, photographers and graphic artists will be happy to know that the NEC MultiSync P221W earned very high marks for performance and color accuracy during third-party tests. The black-level control mentioned above is also a boon to those professionals more likely to consider this monitor, since decreasing the black level adds contrast to the screen.

11. This NEC display also scored extremely well for viewing angle. Any color shift was negligible from a top, bottom and sides wide-angle view.

12. When you are ready to take a break from creating graphics or editing photos, the NEC MultiSync P221W monitor’s many stellar features makes it perfect for a bit of gaming or movie viewing.

13. The MultiSync P221W display comes with a liberal three-year parts-and-labor warranty, which includes the backlight.

14. NEC is also committed to supporting its customers with toll-free technical support, Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT; email; and live chat. It has also created a very friendly support Web site with more information and content, such as the monitor’s manual.
