The digital photography grapevine is busy with breaking news about new products being introduced during January 2012, in addition to the new Fujifilm X-Pro1 and Canon PowerShot G1 X.

Read real customer reviews of the Canon PowerShot G1 X here.

1.   The Beta version of Photoshop Lightroom 4 is now available as a free download for any photographer; however, it expires on March 31, 2012. Various sources report a number of new features for Lightroom 4. Pinpoint editing control allows photographers to manage specific image conditions and to improve specific areas of a photo. These include a white balance brush to fine-tune white balance, removal of moiré in isolated locations and targeted noise reduction.

Photographers will also find a highlight-and-shadow tool to restore details in shadows and highlights. Lightroom 4 offers a number of templates to make very artistic photo books quickly and easily. Not only is there additional video help, but also capabilities to edit and share video clips on Facebook and Flickr. Content can be emailed from Lightroom via any email account. Photographers will like how Lightroom 4 allows them to manage and organize images according to locations as well as access data from cameras with GPS functionality.

2.   The rumor mill is a bit vague about some chatter from Canon that it is developing a mirrorless camera system for 2012. According to the reports, Canon thinks that making cameras smaller and capable of producing high quality images is a future direction of digital photography. Supposedly, Canon is trying to determine a way to make interchangeable lenses for a mirrorless system more attractive, since data suggests that many current mirrorless camera owners only own and/or shoot with one lens.

3.   Reportedly, Canon is also focusing some of its attention on video cameras and their features for 2012. The rumors are that the company will introduce some “new, unique” lenses and that new capabilities, such as auto-focus and a smoother operation of aperture, are also on the drawing board.

4.   Not only can you pre-order the new Canon PowerShot G1 X camera from B&H Photo Video, but also the store has extended the Canon lens and Speedlite rebates to February 7, 2012, that originally ended on January 7th. These include Canon lenses in all categories: ultra-wide zoom, wide-angle, standard zoom, standard and medium telephoto, telephoto zoom, longer telephoto, super telephoto and tilt-sift. Speedlite rebates are available on the 580EX II, 430EX II, 320EX, 270EX II, Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX and Macro Ring Lit MR-14EX.
