They may not rival the British Invasion of rock music of the 1960s, but the young, energetic and creative people at 3 Legged Thing are conquering many digital photographers with their new Rock Legend Range of tripods, monopods and multipods. The first tripod in the new series is named for the first among all guitar gods, Eric Clapton.

  1. As one would expect from a guitar god, the X4 Eric Tripod delivers a memorable performance every time its deployed for DSLRs, HDV cameras and Micro 4/3 cameras. Rated to support as much as 17.6 pounds (8kg), the X4 Eric is designed and built for superior stability.

  1. What makes the X4 Eric Tripod wail is the strength of its four-section legs built with 3 Legged Thing’s new 26mm, 8 Core Stealth Carbon Fiber and the highest aircraft-grade T6061 magnesium alloy. Just like “Slow Hands” caresses the strings of a guitar, this 3LT tripod is a smooth operator. It also has the muscle to overcome the horizontal strain as well as the twisting tendency of a tripod with the weight of a camera/lens.

  1. Although the guitarist may be the dominant musician in a rock band, he (or she) must be able to play within the system of the group. The same goes for the X4 Eric, as the people at 3 Legged Thing are quick to emphasize that they design tripod systems, not just tripods. That’s why the X4 Eric is considered a multi-use tripod with the flexibility to swap parts and accessories with other tripods in the Rock Legend Range. For example, the feet can be unscrewed from the legs and be replaced with spikes and other support options.

  1. The X4 Eric Tripod System also hits the high and low notes, with a maximum height of almost 7 feet (2.06m) and a minimum height of 5.3 inches (135mm).

  1. 3 Legged Thing has given the X4 another leg angle, 80 degrees, in addition to 23 and 55 degrees.

  1. Guitar gods don’t mess with a good thing, and neither does the X4 Eric Tripod. It retains the popular built-in, detachable monopod and the rapid removable/reversible, twin section center column. The 9.7-ounce (264g) monopod collapses to 14 inches (360mm) and extends to a maximum of 4.7 feet (1,440mm).

  1. 3 Legged Thing has upgraded the standard ballast hook from plastic to magnesium alloy and it now includes a carabineer loop.

  1. Although the X4 Eric is not specifically designed to be a travel tripod, it comes with a hard carrying case that is enhanced with a tool pocket.

  1. Other new features of 3 Legged Thing’s X4 Eric Tripod are a wider mounting plate equipped with a grub screw and an optional spirit level.
