Panasonic certainly has no desire to buck the trend, which is why its new LUMIX DMC-SZ7 Digital Camera (introduced late February 2012) is such a wonder. The Panasonic Web page for this camera lists literally dozens of capabilities that make it almost impossible to shoot a bad digital photo or video clip…and you can experience this digital camera “perfection” for less than $200!
The LUMIX DMC-SZ7 is a compact camera according to its dimensions and weight (less than one-third pound with the battery and memory card). It may also represent a turning point, however, when it is no longer fair to call a camera with this much functionality “compact,” or implying limitations. There simply aren’t any (or almost any) for the vast majority of people who want a quality digital camera to capture pictures and videos of family events and fun with friends.
The Leica DC Vario-Elmar 25mm wide-angle, 10x optical zoom lens has all the focal length for spectacular landscapes, mid-range group shots with room for everyone and candid close-ups from quite a distance. Not only does the 10x zoom factor give you a 25–250mm focal range equivalent in 35mm format, but also the Intelligent Zoom mode in conjunction with the Intelligent Resolution technology increases the focal-length reach to almost 20x. The optical zoom feature also works during video recording. It’s important to emphasize that this is a Leica lens, a world leader in optics since 1849. This ensures the LUMIX DMC-SZ7 has a lens of exceptional optical characteristics: 9 glass elements in 7 groups, including 4 aspherical lenses with 6 aspherical surfaces.
The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-SZ7 is the kind of digital camera that goes wherever your life takes you. With MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer technology, your photos won’t suffer from blurring because your hand shook or your body moved. Plus, it improves any night scenes outdoors or pictures in dimly lit rooms. For even more control of night shots, try the Handheld Night Shot Mode. The LUMIX DMC-SZ7 digital camera is built with a 14.1-megapixel MOS sensor and Panasonic’s Venus Engine image processor. The sensor’s high sensitivity and the Venus Engine’s four CPUs allow this camera to process image data at high speed and make all its functions’ response times much faster. This Panasonic camera has a 3.0”, 460,000-dot LCD display with 100% field of view and automatic brightness adjustment.

The LUMIX DMC-SZ7 digital camera also boasts a quite incredible complement of various effects and scene modes, such as Miniature Effect, Panorama Shot, 6 Creative Retouch functions, Auto Retouch, Face Recognition, Face Detection and many others. Two of particular note are High Dynamic Range in the iA Mode and 3D Photo Mode. The camera automatically captures two images of the same scene, but with different exposures in High Dynamic Range. The two pictures are then combined to have a more balanced and dynamic contrast. In many cases, creating 3D images has been reserved for specific 3D camera models; however, on the LUMIX DMC-SZ7, this is just one of many picture-making capabilities. In the 3D mode, you pan the camera as you take 20 different images of the scene or subject. The camera then chooses appropriate images for the right and left eye, which are sprinkled with 3D magic to become a single picture.
