How many more new digital cameras will be announced during 2012? How much more can over-worked and incredibly stressed photography equipment reviewers take? Presumably, quite a bit more, since Nikon wasn’t happy with the D800, D4 and D3200, and a rumored D400, but now everyone’s abuzz about a new D600.

Web sites, bloggers and reviewers are grinding hard on the few “facts” or pseudo-facts that are known. In simplest terms, the D600 is expected to be an entry-level full-frame DSLR. Positioning it in the Nikon hierarchy may be difficult, since the company seemed to suggest that the D800 is an entirely new line of DSLR models, and not an actual replacement for the D700. This would certainly put the D600 lower on the Nikon family tree than the D800, but determining its relationship to the older D700 will have to wait until more details are available and confirmed.

Various sources (some more reliable than others) suggest the D600 would have an Auto DX crop mode, dual SD card slots, a built-in time-lapse function, in-camera RAW editing, new external battery grip and, possibly, GPS. There seems to be no detailed information yet about the size of the sensor. Most of the Internet palaver says the new DSLR will not include an in-camera HDR capability. Many would consider this surprising, given that all of Nikon’s high-end DX-format cameras have this feature. The Nikon D600 is speculated for release during summer 2012. If the D600 were placed below the new D800, then presumably the D600 would cost less than the D800’s $3,000 price tag.

Of the many sources that reported on the rumor of a new Nikon D600 during summer 2012, only one was willing to quantify the probability, putting it at less than 50 percent.

All good things come to those who wait, so check PhotographyTalk’s News Section regularly, as the rumors grind into edible facts.
