1.   Digital photography technology has come so far during such a short period of time that it is easy to forget that one of its benefits is putting more features and performance into an ever-smaller package. Such is Canon’s reputation for its ELPH line of compact cameras; and one of the newest for 2012 is the Powershot ELPH 520 HS. It’s the camera for anyone who wants a photo mighty-mite always at hand, but in the smallest possible footprint. At just 0.76 inches (19.2mm), the 520 HS is the world’s thinnest camera with a 12x optical zoom lens (at the time of release). It delivers an amazing array of digital photography capabilities in a camera that is essentially the size of a deck of playing cards. Plus, with a weight of 5.47 oz. (155g), you’ll never know you’re carrying it until you’re ready to capture all the fun and excitement of your life.

2.   Often, great advances in digital photography technology are not clearly evident (which is how many of us like it). Such is the case with the Powershot ELPH 520 HS. Canon has done a remarkable job of designing a 12x optical zoom lens with 28mm as it widest angle and making it fit stylishly into this small camera body. This is hassle-free digital photography at its finest. You’re able to capture virtually every kind of image: beautiful landscapes from your trek into the wild; sharp, colorful individual and group shots during a special family event; and memories of a night on the town or a vacation just for two.

3.   You won’t notice Canon’s UA technology at work either, except in the quality of the 520 HS’s images. UA, or ultra-high aspherical lens elements, results in a lens small enough to fit in this camera’s small body as well as reduce the aberrations that would typically occur in a lens of this size.

4.   The pocket size of the Canon Powershot ELPH 520 HS didn’t deter Canon from finding a way to include a 10.1-megapixel CMOS sensor and pair it with the latest iteration of the DIGIC 5 Image Processor. Think of the sensor hard at work when you want excellent photos in low-light situations. Simultaneously, the DIGIC 5 will be “processing” visual data at incredibly high speeds and reducing digital noise so much that you’ll still discover highly acceptable images at ISO 3,200. When a processor can operate as quickly and accurately as the DIGIC 5, you’re able to shoot a continuous burst at as much as 6.8 fps and video segments at high speeds, so you can view them in slow motion.

5.   The sensor/processor combination in the ELPH 520 HS compact camera is also responsible for its 1080p Full-HD video at 24 fps, and in stereo sound. You also have a secondary recording mode: 720p HD video at 30 fps. Just imagine! With such a small camera, you have more video recording control and capabilities than what a few decades ago required a large, bulky film camera and separate audio equipment.

6.   The options you have for playback and sharing of your video creations weren’t even part of filmmakers’ dreams 50 years ago. They needed a projector and screen (and develop and edit the film before they showed it), while all you must do is connect your ELPH 520 HS to an HDTV with an HDMI cable.

7.   The Canon Powershot ELPH 520 HS even has the Apple iFrame video format. Your videos will be ready for sharing via email or social media sites and you’ll edit and upload them faster.

8.   This camera also proves that size has nothing to do with intelligence. Canon’s has upgraded its Smart AUTO system for the 520 HS, so it’s capable of scanning every composition and matching it with one of 58 pre-programmed shooting situations that produces the best photo.

If your digital photography dreams are to preserve the many memories of your life and with a small, but powerfully performing camera, then the Canon Powershot ELPH 520 HS could be an excellent choice.
