As a super-zoom compact, the P510 needs some of that space to accommodate an absolutely amazing 42x zoom lens with a focal length range from ultra-wide 24mm to a fantastic 1000mm (35mm equivalent). Even with this extraordinary range, the P510’s lens remains very compact, although, understandably, when fully zoomed extends a significant distance from the body. The 42x zoom lens is not just a telephoto “giant,” but is also a smart alternative to carrying a series of lenses if you owned a DSLR. Why not spend more time shooting and less time exchanging lenses constantly. A new experience for many digital photographers who choose the P510 is the speed with which they are able to move from wide-angle to ultra-telephoto, which translates into more photo opportunities and missing fewer of them.
The important versatility of the Nikon Coolpix P510 is that photos can be framed and composed with either the eye-level electronic viewfinder (EVF) or the 3-inch, 921,000-dot rear LCD screen. Nikon has also designed the LCD to be moved into various positions and angles, tilting on the vertical and horizontal axes.
A feature that more and more photographers prefer in their cameras, but may have not been expected in the P510, is a GPS unit. Not only does it save data on the latitude and longitude of each photo, but also preserves your route whether or not you’re shooting. The camera’s 3D shooting mode is a fun feature that is easy to use. As with many 3D capabilities, two photos are automatically recorded from different angles and then combined; however, the P510 has an extra little treat, in that it does not capture the second image automatically until it knows you are in the best position.
Digital photography enthusiasts shooting with the Coolpix P510 have 4 focus modes to utilize: AF, Macro, Infinity and Manual. As the photographer, you can center-spot the AF mode and choose from 99 focus points. Select Face Priority AF mode and the camera will recognize as many as 12 human faces and set the focus for the nearest to the camera. This Nikon camera is packed with various creative shooting modes. Give your photos better tonal quality with the use of the Backlighting mode. The camera records 3 successive shots at different exposure values, and then creates a single image. Leave your tripod at home after dark and activate the Night Landscape scene mode instead. The camera selects a fast shutter speed to capture a series of shots, and then integrates them into a balanced night shot.
You may also be one of those enthusiastic hobbyists who want to follow the lead of many professionals who are now shooting serious video creations with a digital camera. You’ll be able to do just that with the Nikon Coolpix P510 since it records 1080p Full-HD at 30fps, 720p also at 30 fps and VGA at 640x480. You’ll also capture stereo sound, which is located just behind the flash; plus, the optical zoom is fully operational while shooting movies. You’ll also have more creative options with the camera’s high-speed (HS) video mode. These are not Full-HD segments, but choose the right VGA speed for slow-motion or fast-speed videos.
