2. As soon as you see the FinePix XP170 and hold it in your hands, you know it’s built for rugged, outdoors photography adventures. The top, bottom and one side is wrapped in a shockproof buffer, while the other side has a secure rubber grip.
3. The lens of the FinePix XP 170 is also protected with a reinforced glass shield, the surface of which is coated with a substance to repel water. Whether you’re paddling through wild water or enjoying the surf at the beach, you’ll be able to shoot exciting and probably never-before-seen images of your family and friends in any wet environment.
4. The FinePix XP170 is built with a FUJINON 5x optical zoom lens, which provides a 28mm wide angle to 140mm telephoto focal length range in 35mm format. This is an excellent focal length to capture stunning images of wild, adventurous landscapes and the action you and your friends find there.
5. A 2.7-inch, 230,000-dot LCD display dominates the back of the FinePix XP170. It has been specifically designed to provide a clear, detailed view of whatever wild scene or adventure action you frame, whether you’re shooting during the brightest part of the day or snorkeling above a reef.
6. Enhance the lighting and photo quality of any subject or scene with the XP170’s seven-mode flash strobe. Those campfire images will have virtually no red-eye effect and the LED lamp will support the autofocus, so more of your tough-to-capture photos are sharp.
7. The XP170’s 14-megapixel CMOS image sensor will render your images with great clarity and color accuracy; 14 megapixels is more than enough, considering virtually all the photos you’ll shoot with the XP170 will be outdoors. When the light is low, however, the sensor will produce ISO sensitivities from 100 to 3,200 equivalents at full resolution.
8. A digital camera for the adventurous lifestyle wouldn’t be much of a companion unless it offered a continuous shooting mode of 3, 5 or 10 fps, which the XP170 does. Photographing all the fun and action of being challenged by the outdoors also requires the XP170’s sensor-shift type image stabilization system, which allows you to select faster shutter speeds, so more images are stable and sharp, even when the light is low. You’ll also expect your adventure camera to be capable of tracking swift movement. Press the shutter button just halfway and the FinePix XP170’s contrast-detection autofocus system does an excellent job locking and tracking the fast action on the slopes, down the rapids or through the surf.
9. Of the XP170’s 20 scene modes, three are designated for underwater photography and one dedicated to creating a 360° panorama image. Pan your camera across a view and the camera automatically takes photos of each section of the panorama. It then combines them into a single, dramatic frame of the entire scene.
10. Since people are necessary elements of many of the best adventure photos, Fujifilm has designed the FinePix XP170 with a rather advanced Face Detection technology. Not only is it capable of recognizing as many as 6 faces simultaneously, but also it won’t take a picture until it detects the number of faces you’ve pre-selected.
11. You’ll relive your adventure sports and activities with almost as much excitement as when they happened and find yourself the center of the crowd when you shoot Full HD video with the XP170. You have the choice of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels, at 30 frames per second, 720p (1,280 x 720) and VGA (640 x 480). The video capabilities also include high-speed recording and a One-Touch mode for underwater video, which selects the right settings for that environment.
12. The last, but certainly not the least, of the features you’d want on an adventure camera is wireless connection to smartphones and tablets (Android and Apple). Then, share your adventures with everyone when you upload your photos and video to your Facebook page, YouTube, etc. The XP170 has also high-definition Micro HDMI video outputs and a USB 2.0 High Speed data connection.
As of the writing of this PhotographyTalk article, the Fujifilm FinePix XP170 digital camera was not yet available for purchase or pre-order. Various reports state that it will be released during June 2012, with a MSRP of $280.00.
