Digital Photography Equipment Review—The Zigview S2 Detachable, Remote LCD Screen

Digital photography, like digital technology in general, has spawned a large number of accessories and specialized products that help you solve shooting problems without the need to buy a new or different camera. Argraph’s Zigview S2 detachable, remote 2.5-inch LCD screen is one of those solutions. Now, you can have Live View capabilities if your DSLR camera lacks that feature. The typical solution for many photographers has been to buy or use a point-and-shoot camera with Live View functionality. By doing so, of course, you don’t benefit from the better quality and performance of a DSLR.

The Zigview S2 is attached to your DSLR’s viewfinder, and its compatible with most of the popular camera models. (The Argraph Web site, argraph.com, has a camera compatibility list.) Once the battery is fully charged using the AC adapter, the Zigview is connected to the eyepiece adapter for your DSLR with four screws and screwdriver that are included in the kit. Then, attach the eyepiece adapter to your camera’s viewfinder. Check the viewfinder’s diopter lever or dial because an adjustment may be necessary. Finally, flip the Zigview’s power switch and you’re ready to take advantage of this handy device.

The unique feature of the Zigview S2 is that you can detach the LCD screen and use it remotely from the camera position via a 33-foot transceiver, or separation, cable. Now, you have the freedom to frame a shot, and then check it from various angles for composition, positioning and lighting. Most types of digital photography can benefit from the use of the Zigview, including sports, portraits, nature, journalism and wedding. Shoot over the heads of a crowd of people. Hide behind a tree or rock in the woods and watch the detached LCD for the perfect framing of an animal or bird.

A shutter release cable is required, which runs from the unit to your camera. You must purchase the release that is compatible with your camera. You can also use an IR (infrared) remote, but it must be placed on the back of your camera

Setup of the Zigview S2 is relatively easy. First, go to general setup to adjust screen size, brightness, color, etc. Then, to use the LCD screen, you’ll want to choose the digital viewfinder mode. You’ll also find a number of other helpful modes.
Interval Shot: select the number of images and interval between each shot.
Two Long Exposure modes: Use with the bulb setting on your camera's shutter.
Motion Sensing mode: It releases the shutter when an image is brighter than its default setting.

Some photographers have reported that it was difficult to see the image framed in the detachable LCD screen when working in low light. Others found it a bit of hassle that they couldn’t change exposure or other settings remotely with the Zigview. Instead, they had to return to their cameras to make those adjustments.

Since the Zigview S2 retails for $399.99 (but discounted at lower prices), it’s probably only cost-effective if your type of photography requires it use on a regular basis.
