If I was trying to get lens flare in a shot, how is this consistently done? I read that the light source needs to be in front of you, but I've tried that and I have no lens flare in my photo?
Maybe that's why I don't get much lens flare, I use short telephoto lenses a lot! I'm usually trying to NOT get lens flare, but it seems like when I have, the light was hitting the lens at an angle. I think it might take the right set of circumstances of a point of light being at just the necessary angle to cause flare.
Use an older lens. Lens manufacturers consider flare a 'problem' that needs correction... so as time goes on, lenses are harder to get to flare on purpose.
Putting the sun just outside the corner of frame tends to offer good 'streaked' flare whereas putting it on the in the frame, at the edge, tends to go more for vield flare. That said, a lot really depends on your lens and you'll need to simply experiment with your desired lenses and get a feel for what works and what doesn't.
Make sure to take advantage of the DoF preview button (the only thing I've ever found this useful for) -- as it'll perfectly show you the flaring.
