Correct lens storage - facing up or down?

When your not using a lens and assuming you had both caps on the lens, does it make a difference if the lens is facing up or down?  Right or wrong?

With caps on I can't see why it would matter. However, taking geometry and gravity into account I store mine lens (large end) down.

If at all possible, I store my lenses up horizontal, but if I can't, I carry too many of them.

Up horizontal? Me too I guess. I lay mine down in the bag, so depending if I remain standing or go prone in a hurry they could be in any position. I find when I don't bounce them on the elements, its better.....:)

I am doing it wrong. I just throw mine in. I have a Camelbak pack, and they are dispersed in there somewhere.

It is easier for me to grab the thinner back end of the lens if my bag is tightly packed. So front end down. But most of the time it is not tightly packed, no lens hoods, no filters. But then I lay my lenses down in a way that the glass do not make contact with anything. Therefore my lens changes are super fast (from fixed lens press days).

I store mine fat end up, heard one or two stories of filters getting broken / damaged and stuck on the lenses when stored fat end down which makes them a complete pain to get off. Can't imagine what the owners must have done to damage the filters in such a way? I'd rather not take the chance though.

Larger end in first or down and my bag has extra padding for both lens ends.

You're free to do it that way, but damaging the rear contacts is more a danger than damaging the front element.  Just saying. :silly:
