Death of Photoshop

9 years 7 months ago #403414 by Kenta
I just realized this morning that I very rarely use Photoshop any longer.  Adobe has been adding so many useful features to Lightroom, that I just don't see the need of Photoshop.  I'm sure I can be the only one.

Do you think Adobe's big goal is to phase out Photoshop?

Nope!
They are two totally different platforms. Lightroom has always been about post processing photos, so the market is aimed at photographers of any level. PS is a full creative suite for not only photo work, but also graphic designing, and graphic art work. It is targeted at the commercial business world such as advertising, and media. Most people that were using PS for post processing over Lightroom were people who were using PS before LR came out, and merely stuck with what they were used to. I know that was the case for me, I started with PS 2.0.

Agreed!  PS is primarily a graphic designer's tool, arguably the graphic designer's tool.  Photo processing is just a small part of what it does.  LR was designed specifically for photographers with a photographer's work flow in mind.

Here's Adobe's take on who uses PS.

Oh, wait. You're serious, aren't you?

Um, with a little bit of thought, it's pretty clear that LR is great, but PS is needed for heavy lifting. In addition, as stated above, it's used for much, much more than the petty tasks of a photographer. There are plenty of digital artists out there that truly exercise the power of PS. Your realization of disuse is hardly indicative of a trend. When I get back to my desktop I will add a link here to an amazing edit that couldn't be done in LR.

Hell, most of what I do can't solely be done in LR.

Just because you personally don't use it much, doesn't mean no one uses it.

LR still lacks layers.  I do have this feature in Elements, but use it only as a last resort.  For those who do embrace layers, LR is off their radar.

Correctomundo. I learned layers way back in CS, and I'm a creature of habit. LR is just fine, but I always find my way back to PS for photomerge, selecting, stacking, etc.....

Why so serious?
