Actually, I was looking more for thoughts you might have about doing this at all. Does this "reconstructing" detract essentially from what this fragment represents?

Well, since you asked...

Very well and effectively done. I still prefer the original.

I think it depends upon what you're trying to accomplish. For the restoration, I might suppose that you've only completed part of the work. If I wanted restoration, I'd want the entire fresco put back to its original state, with no trace of crack or flake.

But that's just me. What does your customer think?

Thanks for commenting, Gary.
There was no expectation of restoration work at the outset. I explained I would only eliminate the voids in the frame, repair some of the cracks where substantial graphics were missing, and edit color and luminosity to make it easier to appreciate when framed. I offered a choice, after the work was done, for either version. After seeing the "restored" version print (16x20 metallic paper), it was immediately preferred.
As you say, I did not try to recreate what the artist must have seen when he was done. I would have no idea what that would have been, since I doubt it is possible to regress the colors as they appear today back to what they were 500 years
ago. And cracks probably started forming soon after it was completed, especially with Rome's weather and its cold, damp winters. It is amazing how well they lifted the fresco surface off the church wall, and saved this wonderful image.
Thanks again for taking the time!
