Nikon Nikkor AF 300mm f4 ED

Im looking at this to do some portrait with, what's your thought on IQ, not looking to shoot birds or sports so the AF isn't a really big deal, also looked at the AF-S version, not sure I would gain much with this other than not being a screw drive, Using it on a D750
   thanks

That's an old lens and not a fast focuser.  I have the afs 300 f/4 and its probably my most used lens. For portraits? I'd probably prefer 85mm to 105mm range, but the 300 would work.

Why so serious?

I have been looking at both, Im just looking for some separation from my subjects like children where I wouldn't be so close as to disturb what their doing so I can get those unforced smiles and expressions.

Then you want the AF-S version for autofocus performance. You really do.

Hows the IQ, does it make faces a little flat? nice background separation? Thanks

I can't comment on the IQ. I can comment on older screw drives and auto-focus performance, and trying to capture moving subjects (children). The newer systems simply perform better.

Longer lenses don't make faces flat. Greater distance to subject minimizes distortion of facial features. Greater distance from subject to background results in better separation.

Yup, example my AF 200 f/4 micro, its got great IQ, but awful at moving insects, birds or brats.
My af-s 300 f/4 has great IQ and focusses in an instant, and quietly.
The AF-S 300 or you won't be happy.
