Question about online magazine submissions

I've been sending images to online magazines for submission consideration.  I just received a response back from one stating that one of my photos has been selected to publish on their website.  They have also sent me a bill for what they are calling admin fee and processing for $47.  Now I'm just getting started submitting images to magazines, and this is the first that is asking for money.  Is that standard for getting published?

Ummm! To sum it up quickly. NO!
It is the same as the contests that state you won, now send up $100 to ship your trophy. I do not submit squat to any online magazine, or contest.

No, that's NOT the typical procedure for a magazine submission. There should be submission guidelines for the magazine, the name and address of a publisher, names of editor(s) and other staff, information on their subscription rates, etc. They should send you a contract to license your photo for publication.

Do NOT send them money or give them your credit card information. See what you can find out about them. Look up their address, see if it appears to be a business location. A magazine would be a registered business, you can look on the website for the state where they're located and see if you can find them listed.

There are websites that appear to be magazines or present themselves as such, doesn't mean they are actually published. This doesn't sound legit, a magazine would not be asking you to send them money.

I thought something was up.  Seemed to me this possibly wasn't how most got their photos published.  Well, so much for that one.  Time to keep submitting and see what else I hook into.  :thx2:

Too many places out there that most likely would be happy to publish your photo at no cost.  To be charged for "admin fees" is utterly ridiculous if you ask me.

If any exchange of funds would take place, they should be paying me, would be my attitude.  I implore those thinking about paying for publications like this, it's certain corporate proclivities, that are milking money out of it's users, when really your photo plays an ambiguous role.  As it benefits them too, therefor giving them the opportunity to double dip.

They're a business and making money (if they're a legit business; either way they're making money thru their website). I'd expect to be paid/compensated for my time, ability, effort, learning that goes into my work/my photography.

If you took a good picture why give it to a bunch of bozos who apparently just want to make money off people?
