You were keyed on the guy, right?  You did a good job at holding him in focus; not so much on the woman.  But that's normal; it's really difficult, if not impossible, to get multiple subjects sharp when panning ... each may be moving at slightly different speed, especially when they're in different parts of the frame.

1/40 sec wasn't slow enough to get a good motion blur in the background for the speed at which they were moving.  Try it again even slower ... 1/15, 1/18, even 1/4.

I've tried panning, I suck! if I had done that, nothing would have been in focus!

Yes you're right, I keep the keyed on the guy. Thanks, I'll try with low speed.

Low speed will work. I tried it before and I even had three moving subjects. Panning will work best if you have planning.
