FYI regarding an increase in friend request

8 years 11 months ago #439238 by Alex
Some of you may have noticed an increase in inbound friend requests on PhotographyTalk.  Like many community based sites, we have recently implemented our version of a suggested user list to new folks registering on the site.   They have choice to meet very interesting people (that's you), just as you have the ability to approve or not approve their friendship.

I hope this answers your questions.  Thank you all for being the best part of this community!

As always kind regards,

Alex

Thank you for making PhotographyTalk.com your photography community of choice.

May I suggest that these new members be encouraged to at least fill out their profile, perhaps post a few photos, perhaps give some indication that they are interested in some aspect of the work of the member they want to friend? I have been receiving 5 or 10 of these per day, and only three or four so far have provided enough information on their page to make a sensible response. I think the atmosphere on PT warrants an effort to make this friending more than an automatic and meaningless gesture.....:)

I had quite a few and ignored them for days, because there was nothing on their profile. No avatar shot, no banner shot, no country of origin, nothing. When I found out how it worked, I went back to OK them all. Still no movement. Nothing.

So I agree with John's suggestion. "Fill in these criteria and be unlocked to a network of possible friends."

I also only had conversations with only about three my 90+ friends over the past few years.
I therefore question the importance of friend connections.

And that's the end of the story, when those requesting friendship are only trying to create some presence on the site. Perhaps, if people are encouraged to share their work and interests, more frequent interesting dialogue might opccur, beyond the usual banter about the latest tablet

I've had a few too, and wondered why. I don't particularly want to have my name given out as a suggested user. I quit doing 'friends' on here because there doesn't seem to be much purpose to it anymore.

You have to be friendly to get friend requests, so I rarely see them. I think that most of the people that are on my friends list used to post, but have been MIA for over a year, or so. I see much of this friends, and like crap as quite frankly meaningless in the great scheme of things anyhow.
