The math is pretty easy.

Double or half the ISO number is 1 stop.

Double or half the shutter speed number is 1 stop.

Double or half the f/stop number is 2 stops.

Double or half the distance between the light source and subject is 2 stops.

Stops are just the unit photographers use to measure light. So all of your camera settings are designed to adjust in stops (or fractions of). The way filters and lighting mods alter lighting/exposure is also described in stops. Lighting ratios and power are also described in stops. There are other ways to measure light, but photography uses stops.

One way they are used is that if I adjust one setting by a stop or stops, for instance if I open the aperture 2 stops to get less DOF, but I still want to maintain the same exposure level I had before I made the aperture larger, then I need to adjust something else to reduce exposure by 2 stops. I could use one setting or a variety of settings as long as they add up to 2 stops. I could decrease ISO, increase shutter speed, reduce flash power, move the flash farther away, add a neutral density filter, and so on...

Thanks Mark. Learnt a lot on how to set the stops for a DSLR camera, which I hope to buy in the near future. However, I have a
Canon AE-1, which as you know is a film SLR camera. I suppose I am limted to just the shutter speed and aperture.

I really like the Mark Wallace videos I've seen so far, and I haven't watched this one yet.

But I just have to say, "Understanding Stops with Mark Wallace" has to be the most unfortunate title ever. :)
