If I'm honest, sometimes I think maternity photography can be a little boring.

I think there's a couple of reasons for this.

First, expecting moms have a lot going on, and their body and spirit might not always be up to a long photo shoot.

And second, I think some photographers get stuck in a rut and do the same poses and same style of maternity photos over and over again.

But breaking out of that rut and encouraging your pregnant clients to be a little adventurous can sure be worth it.

Here's a few unique maternity picture ideas that will help you get better results with your maternity photography.

Editor's Note: To illustrate each point I use photos that showcase products from Sew Trendy Fashion and Accessories. Sew Trendy is one of the top clothing suppliers for maternity photography in the world, with an extensive collection of gowns, robes, separates, and props for expecting mothers. Treat It Like a Normal Portrait Shoot

Beautifly Photography

Not every photo you take of an expecting mom has to be a profile shot of her belly.

In fact, there's plenty of opportunities to show off the mom-to-be in a way that's perhaps a little more about her.

Take the photo above as a great example of this. Learn more about maternity photo ideas on our website PhotographyTalk.com.

It's a gorgeous shot with incredible light, and the model is simply walking along in the water, as you might expect with a normal photo shoot at the beach.

Sure, her baby bump isn't on full display, but you can still see it enough to know that this beautiful woman is expecting, and it makes for a more unexpected maternity photo.

Try Showing a Little Skin

Standout Photography

Another unique idea for your maternity portraits is to show a little skin - and I don't just mean revealing mom's baby bump, either.

One of the challenges of maternity photography is to help make the expecting mom feel sexy.

But with the right pose and wardrobe selections, you can create something that shows off just how beautiful the mom-to-be is.

Standout Photography

In the example above, the combination of the model laying down on the tree trunk and the gorgeous, flowing gown that shows off her shoulders, arms, belly, and legs gives this image a distinctly sexy and playful feel. Not all expecting moms will be up for this kind of shot, but for the ones that are, you can see just how impactful the results can be!

Show Some Love

Hope Photography

Maternity photography should focus on the mom-to-be and her baby bump, but they aren't the only ones involved.

Your clients will have significant others, children, friends, and other loved ones that you can introduce into the shot to create something much more unique.

In the image above, you can see how a simple pose and a gentle kiss on the forehead highlights this man's love for his wife and their coming baby.

There's nothing complicated about the shot, either, yet that simple act of sharing a sweet kiss makes this photo much more impactful.

Get Outside

Don't get me wrong - there's nothing wrong with indoor maternity photos.

But by taking your expecting mom outside, you have more opportunities for creating unique shots thanks to different lighting, locations, and so forth.

Additionally, it gives you a chance to pair a beautiful maternity gown with the surrounding environment, as shown above.

As you can see, this can create a beautiful and bold statement that draws your attention immediately to the model.
