You’ve decided to go fulltime with your photography business and to ditch your day job. You’re wondering how you can market yourself as the wedding photographer you want to project. Here are some tips to consider in order to do this:

Step 1: Establish your style

  • If you want to be recognized in the area of wedding photography, you need to be unique. The objective is to develop your own look in order to establish your brand identity. The last thing you want is for your images to be mistaken for somebody else’s.
  • Study other styles, then you create your own. Don’t be a copycat!
  • Think out-of-the-box. Innovate on how to frame your subject. Look up, down, left, right, until you get the perfect framing you want.

Step 2: Build your portfolio

  • By now, you must have taken a handful engagement and wedding photos.
  • You need to identify your “Money Maker” shots and compile them in physical albums and digital albums.
  • You should invest on these materials so that you can show your masterpiece to your prospective clients.
  • Create a mood board for you work. Group your shots that are closely related by their theme, color, feel, location, etc. So for example, if someone will inquire about a garden shoot, you already have an album or a slideshow that is ready to be shown.

Step 3: Build your network

  • Your NETWORK is your NET WORTH.
  • Talk to your local coffee shop baristas, cab drivers, friends, and former officemates; this can include anyone whom you think has a friend or relative who will need a wedding photographer.

Step 4: Participate in Wedding Fairs

  • This is your chance to show them what you’ve got.
  • This is also a chance for you to widen your network of co-suppliers for future events.

Step 5: Participate in Wedding Photography Groups and Forums

  • You can also advertise on Facebook groups or wedding photography forums.
  • This is also a way to find partners or tie-ups for your business. After all, you wouldn’t want to shoot a full wedding by yourself all the time. Social networking sites and forums are great avenues for finding second shooters.

Step 6: Create your own website (Free or Paid)

  • Start to build your website for potential clients to visit and for your network to share.
  • The main objective here is to be searchable on the Internet.

Step 7: Consider paid ads

  • This will make you more visible and let people think that you are everywhere.
  • Paid ads can also make you more credible and professional because you’ve invested time and money to reach out to them.
  • Paid ads are fast and effective ways to generate leads for your business.

Step 8: Benefit from Word of Mouth

  • You’re only as good as your last shoot. When you give your best, people will talk about you. People will refer you. Word of mouth is a powerful way to get hired.
  • Reward people who refer you consistently. You want to give incentives for people who refer you. Benefit from other people’s networks.

Step 9: Create a business card

  • Having a business card allows you to instantly give your contact details in a second. They don’t need to jot down you contact number or email.
  • This gives the client a sense of importance.
  • Business cards allow you or your company to have brand retention.
  • Business cards allow you to present yourself in the most creative manner.

Step 10: Blog!

  • Announce to the world that you or your company exists. Show them the kind of wedding photographer you are.
  • Inform them about your prices and services.
  • Always update your site.
