There is a little over a week left in the year, so it's time to look back at the camera industry and check out the highlights. It has been an interesting year, one with far more cool stuff than other years.
With that said, we thought it'd be a good idea to have a top of best and worst in camera gear.
The folks over at The Camera Store have made an interesting top that we believe is very accurate. The gear presented in their video includes some of the most popular and debated cameras and lenses, so it should grab your attention.
But let's get straight to business. Here is the best and worst gear of 2014.
Best Lenses
1. Sigma50mm f1.4 DG HSM Art
This lens has caused massive turmoil among Nikon and Canon loyal pros. The truth however is that many of them prefer this Sigma over their beloved manufacturer primes. It is simply that good, just like everything else with the "Art " mark on it.
2. Tamron SP 150-600mm f5-6.3
This lens will give you a 600mm focal length in a compact package, with very good image quality and a good price.
3. Canon EF-S 10-18mm f4.5-5.6 IS STM
Plastic? Yes. But it feels good and overall it's a good deal for the money.
Still Cameras
1. Sony Alpha a6000
Yeah, we're not sure about this one. It is an amazing camera that can be used for tons of stuff by amateurs and professionals alike. It's also selling like crazy. But could there be better candidates for number one ?
2. Pentax 645Z
Pentax has a long history of making amazing medium format cameras. The 645Z is certainly one of them. It is built like a miniature tank, it has great low light performance for this kind of camera and the autofocus is very decent.
3. Nikon D750
I know many of you would put the D750 in the top position. After all, you can't really ask for much more from any DSLR. It works impeccably as a still camera, it shoots beautiful video, it's light and very well built and we could go on for hours. The D750 ends the list of best cameras of 2014 made by The Camera Store.
Video Cameras
1. Sony A7S
This is a landmark camera. It's impact might be as powerful as the 5DMKII's in videography. The A7S is a total game changer and long time movie professionals have adopted it for their workflow. It takes a well deserved first position.
2. Panasonic GH4
The GH4 is a camera that feels like it was given full attention to detail. It has brought internal 4K and many other pro features into the realm of low budget filmmaking.
3. Sony FS7
This is the only pure video camera on the list, but it is an amazing one nonetheless. Great tool for cinematographers, although in today's world of convergence, its kind could slowly turn into a niche instrument soon.
Worst Cameras
1. Pentax KS1
No question about it, this has to be the worst camera of the year. It has none of the trademark features of Pentax cameras, it's too flashy and colorful and basically it just sucks.
2.Canon Powershot G1X Mark II
So much was expected from this camera, yet so little has been delivered. There are much better options in both price directions.
3.DJI Phantom 2 Vision +
This is the camera designed for the DJI drone. It looks good and all, but if you really want quality from your aerial footage , just use a GoPro like everyone else.
So there you have them, best and worst. There are couple of more categories presented, but we don't want to spoil the video completely. Now you may or may not agree with Chris and Jordan's opinions as well as their semi-useless chess game. Ultimately, even cameras are a thing of preference and as someone wiser once put it, the best camera is the one you have with you.
