Minolta Lens...is there a new body that fits

12 years 4 months ago #206724 by mklinejr
A friend of mine has an older Minlota camera and his set of lenses. I know that Sony bought the Minolta cameras that were out. Are they still using the same lens mount?

Or do have to tell him to put it up on the shelf and make it look pretty unless he wants to use film?

I can confirm that the minolta lenses WILL fit the Sony Alpha camera bodies. Be careful though, as not all of the older ones will work on auto, but are fine used in manual mode.

I believe there is also an adapter that will allow A-mount lenses to work well with the E-mount Sony NEX cameras.

Actually, after further research I think I should have said "It depends."

What kind of minolta lenses? Minolta apparently made three lens mounts, the SR Mount , the A-mount and the V-mount.

The A-mount is what Sony adopted when they bought Minolta, turning into the Sony α .

According to the articles, if you have V-mount lenses you may be up a creek. If you have SR mount lenses you can buy an adapter to use the lenses on many 4/3 and E-mount cameras, but maybe not A-mount cameras. If you have A-mount lenses, you can get an adapter for E-mount cameras.

Sorry to cloud the issue.

If you have SR mount lenses you can buy an adapter to use the lenses on many 4/3 and E-mount cameras, but maybe not A-mount cameras.

That is very important. If your old Minolta lenses are from, say the SRT-101, then they will not work directly with a modern A-mount Sony body. There are adapters, but they are a kludge, to be avoided. Your best bet with Minolta lenses that old will be the NEX series, which also require an adapter.
