CCDs?

I'm trying to make sense of all the technical stuff in my instruction book. Could someone give me an easy explanation - what are CCDs?

The sensor.

It's the bit at the back of a camera that light hits. It's like film in the old days. Light would hit it and chemicals in the film would make a picture. These days, light hits a "Sensor" and electric signals turn that into a picture (which is stored on a storage card).

CCD= Charge Coupled Device & you also have CMOS =Complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor...Both are the sensors used to capture digital images

CCDs capture everything at once, CMOS sensors capture everything one line at a time (albeit really fast). Which is why videos with CMOS sensors tend to have "rolling shutter" and flashes from cameras look all weird.

CMOS is better in low light though. Which is why Still Cameras use it.

I think the others have pretty well answered your question, but here's my 2 cents.

CCD stands for CHARGE COUPLE DEVICE. When you press the shutter release, letting light into the camera, the CCDs put the image they"see" onto your memory card. Make sense?
