Nikon D7000

I bought a nikon D7000 a few months ago and still trying to figure out where all the settings are and what to set and what not.

So, where do set the aperture?

Use the main dial and hold a button down. I think it's the +/- one, but I'd have to look at the manual to be positive. It also should have a pic of an f/stop on it (or near).

That's how most new Nikons work anyway.

HTH

Congrats on the new camera! I have the D700 and really like it.

On Nikons, including the D7000, aperture is controlled using the sub-command dial on the front right of the body, in front of the shutter release button. This will only affect your aperture, though, if you are in a shooting mode that lets the user adjust aperture, i.e. A - aperture priority or M-manual. In other modes the camera makes the aperture decisions. You can see which aperture you are selecting in the top LCD display or in the viewfinder display.

You might find this cheat sheet useful (because it's a good cheat sheet - no "dummies" reference intended.).

Chris is right. If the body has two dials (a command and a sub-command) you use one for aperture and the other for shutter speed when shooting in Manual mode. I didn't know the D7000 was that high on Nikon's Richter scale. Most new bodies only have the one command dial.

Those all operate closer to Canon cameras. Hold down a button, etc.

I need a student with a D7000 to play with. The camera.. I mean. ;)

In lieu of reading the manual, this is a pretty good site...............

I get to handle all the new gear when my students show up with one. I know the last generation of Nikons (and Canons) well, but haven't had a chance to play with all the newer ones.

Typically people have their cameras about a year (or longer) before they take my course. They try teaching themselves, and later figure out it might help to have a real teacher.

Matthew :)
