Noon shooting

Is it bad to shoot at noon? I heard the sun is too bright, but couldn't I adjust the settings on the camera to get the correct exposure?

Your BEST light is 30 min before and 3 hours after sunrise and 3 hours before sunset an d up to 60-90 min after sunset. Noon light is too harsh due to shadows. Overcast days give you soft ,even light for Macro work and portraits. I you shoot at noon be sure to use "fill flash " to eliminate the shadows on peoples faces.

Shot on a foggy, overcast morning in Ressurrection Bay , Alaska about two hours after dawn

I agree as well with the exception of shooting macros. The bright light allows for stopping down & getting more DOF. Plus I almost always have a speeedlight or ring/point light for adding some fill light.

I agree.

Macros need light. That doesn't say one shouldn't shoot macros in the morning or evening, because having the golden sunset color on a flower while shooting maco can make a beautiful picture.

Shooting at noon is wrong unless you have a shot that requires being shot at noon.

The point almost everyone misses is that gradations of light are what makes the picture more or less interesting. Thuse, shadows, caught at the right time, add to the picture. Many subjects look quite flat when shot at mid-day, because there are few and thin shadows. Other subjects don't have or don't require shadows and can be represented quite well at high noon. I had a picture chosen for display in the Art Center for a month that was shot with the sun quite high in the sky. That particular shot is available only 4 days in the Spring and 4 days in the Fall and only for an hour or less each of those days.

Don't be unwilling to "break the rules" when necessary to get the shot.

I do some noon shooting (between 11am-1pm) depending what my photo session requires. If you shoot high noon on a cloudy day, you won't see harsh shadows.
