Pin hole photography

Silly question, I just read that with pin hole photography. The photographer pokes a hole threw the lens cap and takes the long exposure with the lens cap on? Is that really how that works? I've never tried nor looked into this much. Kind of interesting if this is true.

Here's one online instruction for DIY version. You can buy them readymade too.

My Grandma used to say "Well, I'll be durn!" I guess I inherited that gene. Interesting to say the least... :goodpost:

I have a homemade camera that uses 5x7 film (or paper). The pinhole I made is in a thin piece of copper, so it is sharp, and the shutter is a cork.

You might want to DIY something closer to:

I got a couple of pinhole caps secondhand (thru KEH) made by Finney Field but those are out of production. You might still be able to find a used one. Supposedly the trick if you make your own is to make sure the pinhole in the shim is perfectly round (precise).

So not a silly question, I tried it, used a long-ish exposure but was mostly experimenting. I got a pinhole 'blender' which advances film, I was taking pictures w/ basically a tin can w/a lens cap made out of thin magnetic strips (like they make cheapie fridge magnets w/ads on them). I know someone who's made them out of Altoid tins and calls them 'pintoids' - see www.junkstorecameras.com or www.pintoids.com . Also there's pinholeday.org which occurs in April. .

I haven't tried it with a pinhole in the lens cap. For DSLRs more commonly the lens is removed, and a pinhole body cap is used. You can purchase them, or I made my own by drilling a 1/4" hole in the center of the body cap, and taping a pinholed piece of aluminum (also available for purchase or DIY) over that hole. I've found the meter to be useless, but with a few test shots it's easy to dial in the exposure.
