Taking photos with high ISO?

Another newbie question on ISO. So my Nikon D90 goes up to 3200 ISO I think I read. I'm a little confused, when do you take photos with high ISO? Just super low light? So is it a bad thing to have to use high ISO? I'm guessing that having a photo with a bunch of noise is better than no picture at all?

The higher the ISO, the more grain and noise that will show in the photograph. Musch of that can be smoothed out in post processing, but not all of it. The post processing will also change other aspects of the picture. It boils down to: take the picture in automatic ISO and see what it does. If you don't like it, fiddle with the camera to try other settings. That is how you find out where the "sweet spots" are in your camera for different conditions. Sometimes, it comes to use high ISO or miss the picture.

gigggles yes that is so true set the iso to high sometime will do different things and then setting the shutter speed to high can make it very brighter too gigggles gigggles

Just bear in mind that removing noise in post processing also removes details...But sometimes it's worth using a high ISO if there is no other way to capture a shot

I've found little noise at ISO 1000 indoors on the D90 with the conditions that I shoot under in the arena. I've not tried any higher ISO yet.

Keep in mind, newer cameras are being built to be able to use a higher ISO with less noise. So if one needed too, they can up their ISO as they need to have a higher shutter speed to freeze action(as an example) and in return the photo will still have noise but less noise then cameras made two years ago with equal or lesser ISO number.

There are cameras that go up to 6400 ISO
