New to flash photography

Good day!

I have Nikon D90 and recently purchased a SB600. I was wondering how or what I could do take maximize what I have. What I usually do is I move around the flash and see the results but I'm afraid of getting criticize and or rejected because my photo sucks. I read that the SB600 can be setup as slave, any ideas how I could set it correctly?

Any inputs is very much appreciated.

The basic of flash photography with the SB attached to your d90, you bounce it of the ceiling(a white one if possible)

Try turning it sideways for a bounce of the wall. If you want to change things up, you could use a white card to bounce it the side, or use makeshift reflectors, if your don't have reflectors or white cards.

Also try try turning the flash power up & down, make us of the flash bracketing, But maybe try that once you get the hang of the SB600......:)

SB-600 off camera.
-try doing 45 degrees to the right on your flash.
-put a reflector on the other side.
-if you have modelling option on the SB-600 use it to set up the reflector.
-Then shoot!

Last weekend got my D90s built-in flash to fire my SB800, wirelessly. Follow the steps below:

+Go to camera menu and choose 'Built-in Flash' option.
+Select 'Commander Mode'. On the SB800 then I selected REMOTE.
+ Make sure the channel selected on the camera and flash correspond...
And then presto no wires! :woohoo:

I completely agree with nikonshooter that's a good way to it experiment. I use the same setup (D90/SB600) and it's surprised me with the wide range of effects you can get with just the a camera and one flash mount! Mot especially when set to slave flash. The SB600 doesn't have a diffuser but I have a Stofen which I got for indoor portraits when used with a bounced flash.
:)
