How many photos in your portfolio?

7 years 6 months ago #498833 by Wayne Tidwell
I'm far from being a pro and most likely closer to the beginner side of things.  However I'm starting to get some shots I'm happy with.  I'd like to set up a portfolio, which I'm sure will be changing as I learn.

What I want to know, as a general rule, how many photos should go in a portfolio?

It depends what you want to specialise in. So who are the people you show it to? Wedding couples? Magazine editors? Families?

I have 2 portfolio's.

1.  Personal favorites (my eyes/friends & family only) - which has 78 in it

2. Professional favorites (clients/prospects) - which has 15 in it.

About 20 or so seems typical, and yes, being able to change  photos out as needed is probably a good way to go.

20 and it's tough keeping it there.  I was told long ago, keep your portfolio loaded with NOTHING but your absolute best.

15 to 20 is a great number. However, you might choose to create multiple portfolios for a variety of situations that may arise. This is especially helpful for if you have multiple bodies of work that really differ from one another (for instance, a fine art portfolio vs. a wedding portfolio)

My photo book has 10 pages in it so 20. But mine is more of a showing people what the northern half of Arizona looks like since I lived there for so long. I wish I had not lost all of my film negatives from the early days in a fire, or I would have had a ton of punk rock, and underground society stuff. I actually liked that stuff a whole lot. Those were the days that I lived in LA, and a couple of other places. Which is also why I have a fireproof safe for my removable HD.
