Time of year when sunsets are more dramatic?

4 years 7 months ago #658545 by Stacy Kaufman
I don't know if this might be considered a dumb question, but I'm going to ask it anyway.  I was able to photography a beautiful sunset earlier this week.

Now days are starting to get shorter, colder mornings and soon, winter will be upon us.  So is there a time of the year where the sun because of some cosmic positioning is better for sunset photos?

Not really, Stacy, because the weather conditions may be
spectacular at any time.

One thing makes them more interesting and it is the lower
Sun in the sky between September and Marsh — that makes
the sets and rises last quite longer.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

I see you are in the southern hemisphere and that
makes it between Marsh and September for you!

I've gotten some nice sunset shots in the fall here in the US (in the region where I live). This time of year when the sun's getting lower in the sky works for me, it's a little early yet. It usually depends on the weather too.

Try noticing when the sun is closer to setting what it looks like outside. Maybe try a few photos, and some evenings just use your eyes and look, or try looking thru the viewfinder and see what you might be able to get.

The lower Sun in late fall to early Spring — in the northern
hemisphere — will be dramatic and theatrical when, by hea-
vily covered skies, the sunlight is sneaking very low under
the clouds.

G'day Stacy

As a generalisation - I find Autumn and Spring weather changes give me / us more opportunities for interesting sunrises & sunsets ~ however as our mate NS also says ... "the weather conditions may be spectacular at any time."

ps- I have also had heaps of crappy sunrises & sunsets during the same period as well :(

You might look at SkyFire, which is an add-on for TPE on iOS, or an Android app.
